Rating: (5 / 5 Cars!)

There are literally hundreds of upgrades available for just about every radio controlled car & truck made today. How do you decide what to spend your hard earned dollars on? Some buy for looks, others for performance. The RC Solutions roll cage for the Losi LST is one of the best upgrades you can buy and scores a perfect 10 when it comes to both looks & performance.

Packaging / Instructions:
This roll cage comes unassembled in a thick plastic bag from RC Solutions. All of the hardware needed for installation is included. The instructions are pretty clear with each step described clearly along with helpful photos to reference. Make sure you follow the instructions closely, I made the mistake of waiting to put the fuel tank back in last and it won’t go in with the cage fully installed. That added about 30 minutes to the project!

Ease of Installation:
The roll cage install took me about 3 hours total. This is a good time to upgrade to the Losi aluminum diff cases if you haven’t already. In case you don’t know, the stock plastic diff cases tend to split under heavy load from the Mach 26 engine. Back to the install, once you remove the wheels, gear cover and fuel tank you are ready to begin. This truck is very symmetrical so once I finished the rear end of the truck I was an expert when it came to the front end! The way the cage bolts to the truck is a really cool design. RC Solutions made a similar plate to the stock LST one but added small vertical ‘wings’ on each side that the roll cage bolts to (See Photo). The plates are identical for the front and the rear.

You will also be replacing the transmission protection plate on the underside of the chassis. This plate would have come off in about 3 minutes had it not been for the red locktite used on 2 of the screws directly under the motor! As you may know, blue locktite’s hold can be broken normally while red locktite needs to be heated. I heated and heated and gave it all I had until the small allen head finally stripped out. I ended up making a notch in the screw with my dremmel tool and used a used a long flathead screwdriver to break it loose. Needless to say this was the most frustrating part of the install. Everything else went according to plan. A brief heads up about this in the instructions would have been nice.

After you get the front, rear, and lower tranny plates installed you are ready to assemble the cage. It almost doesn’t need instructions but follow them anyway. They will help you figure out the correct orientation of each piece (left / right, front / rear). The front piece that interlocks the two long main pieces can easily be put in backwards. Make sure the side with the small hole cut out near the bottom is on the right side of the truck (gear side). Bolt the cage into place up front and in back and put in all of the body clips as shown in the instructions and your LST is ready to take on anything!

It can be upsetting to cut up a good body to accommodate a roll cage. I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered that I only had to make 2 small notches in the body that are barely visible in order for it to fit properly. Always run with a body on the truck, if you don’t you only risk unnecessary damage in a crash. In an upside down crash, the truck tends to dig in to the ground and start to tumble violently. When a body is used the truck tends to slide and not tumble. Some of the RC Solutions roll cage designs have the body mounts cut right into the roll cage like the E-Maxx. The LST roll cage uses your stock body mount posts which work nicely.

Performance / Durability:
I own an RC Solutions roll cage for my E-Maxx which is why I ordered one for the LST as soon as I bought the truck. These guys are creative and know how to carve their own path in the market through innovative and functional designs. Their roll cages pay for themselves in the long run considering the parts they protect every time you run your truck. The picture of the guy standing on top of the truck is no gimmick. These roll cages are the real deal and I strongly recommend adding one. Forget about anything less than this roll cage. Less expensive 3 point designs require you to drill holes in your chassis and these cages rarely stay securely fastened after a few hard tumbles. With a $149 MSRP the roll cage is not a cheap upgrade but I am a strong advocate of the phrase, "You get what you pay for"

It’s hard to give any upgrade a perfect score but considering the protection and bling factor the RC Solutions cage adds to your LST I would say hands down it earns a 5 car rating. Your local Hobby Shop should stock the LST roll cage. If not they can order it and you can be fully protected in no time!
